Winning at Hidden mode
Drafting blind — how to pick a strong basketball five when the stat lines are withheld.
Hidden mode gives you the club and season and the names, but no stats. You are drafting on memory: you have to know who was actually good on the 2013 Žalgiris or the 2019 CSKA, not just recognise the names. It is the same pool and the same gauntlet as Classic — only the information is taken away — which makes it the purest test of European basketball knowledge in the game.
The single best habit is to anchor on the club-season. Recall who led that team — the go-to scorer, the floor general, the anchor inside — and draft those roles rather than the most familiar name. Familiarity is a trap; the player you remember hearing about is not always the player who produced that particular year.
What you can still see
Hidden hides the numbers, not everything. You still get the club, the exact season, every name on the roster, and each player's positions — and positions are the one piece of stat-shaped information that survives. A player listed as a center is a rebounder and rim protector until proven otherwise; a player listed only at the point is your playmaker. Read the positions the way you would read a box score.
Greyed-out players still tell you something too: they are the ones who cannot fit an open spot. If most of a roster is greyed out, your remaining spots are already dictating the shape of the pick.
Anchor on the club-season
Before you look at the names, think about the team. Did that club win the title that year, or reach the Final Four? Who was the star everyone remembers from that run? Who was the captain, the long-tenured local, the import who carried the scoring load? A season you can reconstruct as a story is a season you can draft well from.
If a club-season means nothing to you, that is exactly what re-spins are for. Hidden allows the same two free re-spins as Classic, and spending one to land on a team you actually know is worth far more than guessing at a roster you do not.
Draft roles, not reputations
Since you cannot see the numbers, fall back on the same balance principle that wins in Classic: try to leave each round with a different kind of player. A remembered scorer, a remembered playmaker, a remembered big. You will not always be right, but a spread of roles protects you from accidentally drafting five of the same thing blind — and the six-category rating still rewards that spread even when you built it from memory.
Positions still show, so use them. If you know a club-season had a dominant center, that is a safe frontcourt pick even when you cannot recall the exact averages. If you are unsure between two guards, take the one whose positions cover more of your open spots.
Memory shortcuts that actually work
- Title seasons. The best player on a championship team is almost always a strong pick, and you are more likely to remember that season.
- Award winners and national-team stars. A player who was an MVP candidate or a fixture for his country that year usually has a strong profile.
- The captain and the long-serving local. Clubs are built around them; their production in a given season is often steadier than a one-year import's.
- The import scorer. Many club-seasons had one foreign guard or wing brought in to score. If you can recall who that was, you have your scorer.
- The big nobody talks about. Rim protectors and rebounders get forgotten, but they are exactly the category your five will be missing. If a name rings a bell as 'the big man on that team', take him.
When you genuinely do not know
Sometimes the draw lands on a season you cannot place at all and the re-spins are gone. Do not panic-pick the most famous name. Fall back to structure: fill the position you still need, prefer players listed at a single position (they tend to be specialists at it), and keep the balance rule — one of each kind rather than a second of something you already have.
A blind pick that covers an empty category will usually out-perform a familiar name that duplicates one. That is the whole trick of Hidden mode: the game still rewards balance, so draft for it even when you cannot see it.
